Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and pronounce phonetic sounds in words.

Materials and Prep

  • Whiteboard or large sheet of paper
  • Markers or crayons

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Phonetic Sound Hunt

Take a walk around your home and look for objects that start with different phonetic sounds. When you find an object, say its name out loud and emphasize the beginning sound. For example, if you find a ball, say "buh-buh-ball". Write down the objects and their corresponding sounds on the whiteboard or paper.

  2. Phonetic Sound Sorting

Draw two columns on the whiteboard or paper and label them "M" and "S". Ask the student to think of words that start with the "m" sound and words that start with the "s" sound. Write down the words in the appropriate columns. Encourage the student to come up with as many words as possible.

  3. Phonetic Sound Bingo

Create a simple bingo grid on the whiteboard or paper. Write down different phonetic sounds in each square. Give the student a set of small objects or tokens to use as markers. Call out a word that starts with a specific sound, and the student should find and cover the corresponding square. The goal is to get a line of covered squares in any direction.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn about phonetic sounds. Phonetic sounds are the different sounds that letters make in words."
  • "We will go on a sound hunt around our home and find objects that start with different sounds. For example, we can find things that start with the 'buh' sound like 'ball' or 'banana'."
  • "After our sound hunt, we will sort the objects we found into different columns based on their starting sounds. We will have a column for 'm' sounds and a column for 's' sounds."
  • "Finally, we will play a fun game called Phonetic Sound Bingo. I will call out words that start with a specific sound, and you need to find and cover the corresponding sound on the bingo grid."
