Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve arithmetic problems related to Pokemon characters and develop a better understanding of basic mathematical operations.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Pokemon cards or pictures (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Pokemon Addition: Choose two Pokemon characters and write down their combat power (CP) values. Add the CP values together to find the total CP.
-
Pokemon Subtraction: Select a Pokemon character and its CP value. Choose a number to subtract from the CP value to find the remaining CP.
-
Pokemon Multiplication: Pick two Pokemon characters and their CP values. Multiply the CP values to find the product.
-
Pokemon Division: Select a Pokemon character and its CP value. Divide the CP value by a chosen number to find the quotient.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Mathematics is all around us, even in our favorite Pokemon characters!"
- "Addition is a way to combine numbers. We can add the Combat Power (CP) values of different Pokemon to find the total CP."
- "Subtraction helps us find the difference between two numbers. We can subtract a number from a Pokemon's CP value to find the remaining CP."
- "Multiplication is a way to find the total when we have equal groups. We can multiply the CP values of two Pokemon to find the product."
- "Division helps us share or distribute things equally. We can divide a Pokemon's CP value by a number to find how much CP each part gets."
