Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand some basic concepts of chemistry through fun experiments.
Materials and Prep
- Water
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food coloring (optional)
- Plastic cups or containers
- Measuring spoons
- Small bowls or plates
- Plastic droppers or pipettes (optional)
- Protective apron or old clothes
- Adult supervision
Activities
-
Colorful Volcano: Fill a plastic cup or container halfway with vinegar. Add a few drops of food coloring if desired. In a separate small bowl or plate, measure one or two spoonfuls of baking soda. Carefully pour the baking soda into the vinegar and watch the colorful eruption!
-
Fizzing Colors: Fill several plastic cups or containers with water. Add a few drops of different food coloring to each cup. Using a plastic dropper or pipette, drop a small amount of vinegar into each cup and observe the fizzing colors mixing together.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Chemistry is a special kind of science that helps us understand how different things can change and react with each other."
- "Today, we will be doing some fun experiments to see what happens when we mix certain things together."
- "We will use vinegar and baking soda, which are safe materials, to create some cool reactions."
- "When we mix baking soda and vinegar, they create a gas called carbon dioxide, which makes the liquid bubble and fizz."
- "We can also add food coloring to make the reactions more colorful and exciting."
- "Remember to always have an adult help you and wear protective clothing to stay safe during experiments."
