Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to spell and understand key vocabulary related to the butterfly life cycle.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Butterfly life cycle diagram or poster
Activities
-
Start by discussing the different stages of a butterfly's life cycle. Show the butterfly life cycle diagram or poster to the student.
-
Ask the student to write down the names of the four main stages of the butterfly life cycle: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), adult.
-
Provide the student with a list of scrambled words related to the butterfly life cycle. They should unscramble each word and write down the correctly spelled word next to it. For example, if the scrambled word is "tge", the correct word is "egg".
-
Have the student create flashcards with the correctly spelled words from the previous activity. On one side of the flashcard, write the word, and on the other side, draw a picture representing that stage of the butterfly life cycle.
-
Play a spelling game with the flashcards. Show the student a flashcard with a picture, and ask them to spell the corresponding word. If they spell it correctly, they can keep the flashcard. If not, the flashcard goes back in the pile. The goal is to collect as many flashcards as possible.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Butterflies go through a life cycle, just like humans. They start as an egg, then become a caterpillar, then a chrysalis, and finally, an adult butterfly."
- "The first stage is the egg stage. The butterfly lays its eggs on a leaf, and they hatch into caterpillars."
- "The second stage is the larva stage, which is also known as the caterpillar stage. Caterpillars eat a lot and grow very quickly during this stage."
- "After the caterpillar stage, the butterfly forms a chrysalis. This is the pupa stage. Inside the chrysalis, amazing changes happen."
- "Finally, the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis as an adult. It is now ready to fly and lay eggs, starting the life cycle all over again."
