Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic concepts of physics through fun activities.
Materials and Prep
- Toilet paper rolls
- Marbles or small balls
- Toy cars or small vehicles
- Books or blocks
- Masking tape
- Scissors
- Markers
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a clear space to perform the activities and gather all the materials listed above.
Activities
-
Rolling Marbles
Take a toilet paper roll and place it at the edge of a table. Drop a marble through the roll and observe what happens. Try rolling the marble from different heights and angles. What do you notice? How does the speed and distance change?
-
Racing Cars
Use masking tape to create a race track on the floor. Place two toy cars at the starting line and let them go. Observe which car reaches the finish line first. Experiment with different sizes and weights of cars. What factors affect the speed of the cars?
-
Tower Challenge
Build towers using books or blocks. Start with a single block as the base and add more blocks on top. See how tall you can make the tower before it falls. What happens when you add more blocks? How does the stability of the tower change?
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Physics is the science that helps us understand how things move and interact with each other."
- "When we roll marbles through a tube, we can see how the speed and distance change based on how we drop or roll them."
- "In our car race, we can experiment with different cars and observe which one is faster. We can learn about how size and weight affect speed."
- "When we build towers with blocks or books, we can see how adding more blocks makes the tower taller, but it may also make it less stable."
