Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and recognize the Fibonacci sequence.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils or crayons
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction to Fibonacci
- Creating Fibonacci Spirals
- Counting Fibonacci Numbers
- Fibonacci in Nature
Start by explaining to the student what the Fibonacci sequence is. Use simple language and examples that they can relate to, such as counting petals on a flower or the number of stripes on a pineapple.
Ask the student to draw a small square on the paper. Then, have them draw a square next to it that is the same size. Repeat this process, each time making the new square the same size as the previous two combined. Connect the corners of the squares to create a spiral. Explain that this is the Fibonacci spiral, which is found in nature.
Have the student write down the first few numbers of the Fibonacci sequence: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc. Help them count and write down the next few numbers. Encourage them to notice the pattern and discuss how each number is the sum of the two previous numbers.
Show the student pictures of natural objects that exhibit the Fibonacci sequence, such as pinecones, seashells, or sunflowers. Discuss how these objects grow in a way that follows the Fibonacci pattern.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about the Fibonacci sequence. Can you say 'Fibonacci'?"
- "The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers that starts with 0 and 1, and each subsequent number is the sum of the two previous numbers."
- "We can see the Fibonacci sequence in nature, like in the petals of flowers or the spirals of seashells."
- "Let's draw a Fibonacci spiral together. We will start with a small square and then make new squares that are the same size as the previous two combined."
- "Can you count the Fibonacci numbers? Let's write them down together."
- "Look at these pictures of pinecones, seashells, and sunflowers. Can you see the pattern of the Fibonacci sequence in them?"
