Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create an ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos, understanding its cultural significance and the importance of honoring loved ones who have passed away.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Magazines or printed images
  • Optional: small trinkets or objects that represent the loved ones
  • Research and gather information about Dia de los Muertos and its traditions

Activities

  1. Start by discussing Dia de los Muertos and its cultural significance. Talk about the purpose of creating an ofrenda and why it is important to honor loved ones who have passed away.
  2. Brainstorm with the student about the loved ones they would like to honor in their ofrenda. Encourage them to think about the person's interests, favorite things, and special memories.
  3. Provide the necessary materials and guide the student in creating their ofrenda. They can use construction paper to create a base, and decorate it with images, drawings, and words that represent their loved ones.
  4. Encourage the student to include photographs or printed images of their loved ones. They can also add small trinkets or objects that hold sentimental value.
  5. Once the ofrenda is complete, have a discussion with the student about what they have learned and why they chose specific elements for their ofrenda. Encourage them to share stories and memories associated with their loved ones.
