Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create an ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos, a traditional Mexican celebration honoring the deceased.

Materials and Prep

  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Magazines or printed pictures
  • Access to a computer with internet

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the significance of Dia de los Muertos and the elements typically included in an ofrenda.

Activities

  1. Research and Gather Inspiration: Use the internet or books to learn more about Dia de los Muertos and ofrendas. Look for pictures and examples to get inspiration for your own ofrenda.
  2. Create a Plan: Decide what elements you want to include in your ofrenda. Think about the deceased individuals you want to honor and what items or symbols represent them.
  3. Gather Materials: Collect the construction paper, scissors, glue, markers or colored pencils, and any pictures or magazine cutouts you want to use.
  4. Design and Assemble: Use the construction paper and other materials to create the different components of your ofrenda. Cut out shapes, draw or write meaningful messages, and arrange everything on a flat surface.
  5. Reflect and Share: Once your ofrenda is complete, take a moment to reflect on the significance of the items you included and the memories they represent. Share your creation with a family member or friend, explaining the meaning behind each element.
