Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create an ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Printed pictures of loved ones or celebrities
  • Optional: Small objects or mementos

Prior to the lesson, gather the materials and print the pictures if needed.

Activities

  1. Discuss the meaning and purpose of an ofrenda. Explain that an ofrenda is a special altar created to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away during the celebration of Dia de los Muertos.

  2. Brainstorm with the student who they would like to remember and honor on their ofrenda. Encourage them to think about family members, friends, or even famous people they admire.

  3. Using the construction paper, markers or crayons, and scissors, guide the student in creating a small altar or display for their ofrenda. They can fold the construction paper to create a standing structure or use it as a flat surface.

  4. Help the student cut out pictures of their chosen loved ones or celebrities and glue them onto the ofrenda. They can also add small objects or mementos that remind them of those individuals.

  5. Encourage the student to personalize their ofrenda by adding drawings, decorations, or even writing messages or memories about the people they are honoring.

  6. Once the ofrenda is complete, discuss the importance of this tradition in remembering and celebrating the lives of those who have passed away. Encourage the student to share stories or memories associated with the individuals on their ofrenda.
