Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create an ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos, understanding its significance in Mexican culture and the importance of honoring loved ones who have passed away.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Printed pictures of loved ones or blank paper to draw pictures
  • Optional: small objects or mementos to include on the ofrenda
  • Information about Dia de los Muertos and the tradition of creating ofrendas

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of Dia de los Muertos and explain its significance in Mexican culture. Discuss how it is a time to remember and honor loved ones who have passed away.
  2. Show examples of ofrendas and explain their purpose. Discuss the different elements typically included on an ofrenda, such as pictures, favorite foods, and personal belongings of the deceased.
  3. Have the student gather materials and begin creating their own ofrenda. Encourage them to include pictures of loved ones, drawings, and any small objects or mementos that hold special meaning.
  4. Once the ofrenda is complete, have the student explain the significance of each element they included and why it is important to honor their loved ones.
  5. Display the finished ofrenda in a special place and encourage the student to share stories and memories of the individuals they are honoring.
