Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic geometry concepts through art activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Coloring materials (crayons, markers, colored pencils)

No prior knowledge is needed for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Create a Geometric Animal

Choose an animal you like and draw its outline on a piece of paper. Then, using geometric shapes such as triangles, circles, and squares, fill in the outline to create your own unique geometric animal artwork. Color it in using your coloring materials.

  2. Design a Tessellation

A tessellation is a pattern made by repeating a shape without any gaps or overlaps. Start by drawing a simple shape, like a square or a triangle, on a piece of paper. Then, using your ruler, create a grid of the same shape by connecting the corners of each shape. Fill in the shapes with different colors or patterns to create a visually appealing tessellation.

  3. Construct a 3D Shape

Choose a 3D shape you want to create, such as a cube or a pyramid. Using your ruler and pencil, draw the net of the shape on a piece of paper. Cut out the net and fold along the lines to construct the 3D shape. Decorate it with colors or patterns if desired.

Fourth Grade Talking Points

  • "Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, and properties of figures."
  • "Geometric shapes are the basic building blocks of geometry. Some examples of geometric shapes are triangles, circles, and squares."
  • "A tessellation is a pattern made by repeating a shape without any gaps or overlaps. It is a type of geometric design."
  • "3D shapes are objects that have three dimensions - length, width, and height. They are also called solid shapes. Examples of 3D shapes include cubes, pyramids, and spheres."
