Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use arithmetic skills to create your own art.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Coloring materials (crayons, markers, colored pencils)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Number Patterns

Create a number pattern by starting with a number and adding the same amount each time. For example, start with 1 and add 2 each time: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. Create your own number pattern and write it down.

  2. Activity 2: Math Art

Use your number pattern to create an art piece. For each number in your pattern, draw a shape or design on your paper. For example, if your pattern is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, you can draw a series of squares increasing in size. Color your art piece using your coloring materials.

  3. Activity 3: Share and Explain

Show your art piece to someone and explain the number pattern you used to create it. Discuss how arithmetic can be used to create art.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
  • "Number patterns are sequences of numbers that follow a certain rule or pattern."
  • "We can use arithmetic to create art by using number patterns to guide our designs."
  • "By adding or subtracting the same amount each time, we can create a series of numbers that form a pattern."
  • "Using these number patterns, we can create different shapes, designs, or colors in our art."
  • "Arithmetic allows us to combine our love for math and art, and create something unique and beautiful."
