Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to control your emotions and calm down using practical arts activities.
Materials and Prep
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers or crayons
- Empty jar or bottle
- Water
- Glitter or small beads
- Index cards
Before starting the lesson, make sure your child understands the concept of emotions and how they can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Activities
-
Create an Emotion Collage:
Ask your child to think about different emotions they experience. Provide them with construction paper, scissors, glue, and markers or crayons. Instruct them to cut out pictures from magazines or draw their own representations of different emotions. They can then glue these pictures onto the construction paper to create an emotion collage.
-
Create a Calm Down Jar:
Fill an empty jar or bottle with water, leaving some space at the top. Add glitter or small beads to the water. Explain to your child that this jar represents their emotions. When they feel overwhelmed, they can shake the jar and watch the glitter or beads swirling around. As they focus on the swirling motion, they can take deep breaths and calm down.
-
Create Emotion Flashcards:
Using index cards, help your child create emotion flashcards. On each card, write the name of an emotion and draw a simple facial expression to represent it. Use these flashcards to play a game of emotion charades, where your child acts out the emotion without speaking, and you have to guess which emotion they are portraying.
