Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to observe and identify minnows in a creek.

Materials and Prep

  • A creek or stream nearby
  • A small net or container
  • A magnifying glass (optional)
  • A notebook and pencil

Activities

  1. Visit a nearby creek or stream with adult supervision.
  2. Make sure to have an adult accompany you for safety.

  3. Use the net or container to catch some water from the creek.
  4. Gently scoop the water to catch some minnows.

  5. Observe the minnows using your magnifying glass (if available).
  6. Take a closer look at the minnows and notice their features.

  7. Draw and describe the minnows in your notebook.
  8. Take your time to sketch and write about what you see.

  9. Release the minnows back into the creek.
  10. Make sure to return the minnows to their natural habitat.
