Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve arithmetic problems while unraveling a mystery.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Plain paper
  • Mystery story or scenario (you can create your own or find one online)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a good understanding of basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Activities

  1. Read or present the mystery story or scenario to the student. Make sure to engage their interest and curiosity.

  2. Introduce the first clue, which is a math problem. For example, "To find the secret location, you must solve the following addition problem: 25 + 17 = ?"

  3. Allow the student some time to solve the math problem independently. Provide assistance if needed.

  4. Once the student has the answer, discuss it together and reveal the next clue or step in the mystery.

  5. Continue this pattern of presenting math problems as clues and revealing the next steps of the mystery until the final solution is reached.

  6. Conclude the lesson by discussing the solution to the mystery and congratulating the student on their math skills and problem-solving abilities.
