By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use nouns, verbs, and adjectives in Halloween-themed sentences.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayons
No prior knowledge or preparation is required.
Activities
-
Monster Sentence Match-Up
Write down Halloween-themed nouns (e.g., ghost, pumpkin, bat) on separate pieces of paper. Write down Halloween-themed verbs (e.g., scare, carve, fly) on separate pieces of paper. Write down Halloween-themed adjectives (e.g., spooky, creepy, orange) on separate pieces of paper. Mix them up and let your child match a noun, verb, and adjective to form a complete sentence. Encourage them to read the sentence aloud.
-
Descriptive Costume Drawing
Ask your child to imagine a Halloween costume and describe it using adjectives. Have them draw their costume and label it with the nouns and adjectives they used. For example, if they describe a "scary vampire" costume, they should draw a vampire and label it with the words "scary" and "vampire".
-
Spooky Storytelling
Together with your child, create a spooky Halloween story. Take turns adding sentences to the story, making sure to include nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Encourage your child to use their imagination and make the story as creative and Halloween-themed as possible.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or animals. Can you name some Halloween nouns? For example, a ghost is a noun because it is a thing."
- "Verbs are words that show action or describe what someone or something is doing. Can you think of Halloween verbs? For example, 'scare' is a verb because it shows what a ghost does."
- "Adjectives are words that describe or give more information about nouns. Can you come up with Halloween adjectives? For example, 'spooky' is an adjective because it describes how something feels."
- "When we put nouns, verbs, and adjectives together in a sentence, we can create a complete thought. Let's practice making sentences using Halloween words!"
