Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and identify the concept of place value in numbers.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Start by explaining to the student that place value is the value of a digit based on its position in a number. For example, in the number 123, the digit 1 is in the hundreds place, the digit 2 is in the tens place, and the digit 3 is in the ones place.
- Give the student a few simple numbers, such as 5, 12, and 37. Ask them to write each number and identify the value of each digit based on its position.
- Next, draw a place value chart on the paper, with three columns labeled "Hundreds," "Tens," and "Ones." Ask the student to write a three-digit number of their choice in the chart, filling in the correct digit in each column.
- Now, give the student a few random numbers and ask them to write the numbers in expanded form. For example, if given the number 246, they should write it as 200 + 40 + 6.
- To reinforce the concept further, play a game of "Guess the Number." Think of a three-digit number and give the student clues about the value of each digit. For example, you could say, "The hundreds digit is 4, the tens digit is 5, and the ones digit is 2. What is the number?"
