Objective

By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to identify and describe different insects, understand their importance in the environment, and develop an appreciation for their role in nature.

Materials and Prep

  • Magnifying glass
  • Empty jar with a lid
  • Colorful construction paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

No additional preparation required.

Activities

  1. Outdoor Insect Hunt:

Take the toddler outside to explore the backyard or a nearby park. Encourage them to observe insects they come across. Use the magnifying glass to get a closer look at the insects. Discuss their characteristics, such as their colors, shapes, and movements.

  2. Creating an Insect Jar:

Have the toddler collect a few non-harmful insects in the jar. Help them identify the insects and explain that it is important to treat them with care and release them back into their natural habitat after observing. Discuss why insects are important for the environment.

  3. Artistic Insect Collage:

Provide the toddler with colorful construction paper, markers or crayons, scissors, and a glue stick. Ask them to draw and cut out various insects, or use templates if needed. Help them glue the insects onto another piece of paper to create an insect collage. Encourage them to label the insects they include.
