Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve horse-themed math problems.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Blank paper
  • Calculator (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Horse Race Word Problems

Write down 5 word problems related to horse races. For example: "In a race, Horse A finishes 3 seconds ahead of Horse B. If Horse A completes the race in 1 minute and 45 seconds, how long did it take Horse B to finish the race?"

Have the student solve each word problem using arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division). Encourage them to show their work and explain their reasoning.

  2. Activity 2: Horse Stable Math

Ask the student to imagine they own a horse stable with 10 horses. Each horse needs 4 bales of hay per week. How many bales of hay are needed in total for a week? How many bales of hay are needed in a month?

Have the student calculate the total number of bales of hay needed for a week and a month using multiplication. Discuss different strategies for solving the problem, such as using repeated addition or multiplication.

Fourth Grade Talking Points

  • "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
  • "Word problems are math problems presented in the form of a story or situation. They require us to read and understand the problem before applying mathematical operations."
  • "In horse racing, it's important to understand the concept of time and how to compare different durations. This helps us determine the order of finish and calculate time differences."
  • "Multiplication is a way to find the total when we have groups of the same size. In the horse stable math activity, we used multiplication to find the total number of bales of hay needed."
  • "Remember to show your work and explain your reasoning when solving math problems. This helps others understand your thought process and ensures accuracy."
