Crafting Tales from the 41st Millennium: Character Descriptions

Lesson Steps:

1. Introduction: Heroes and Villains of the 41st Millennium (10 mins)

Let's talk about Warhammer 40,000! Who are some of your favorite characters or units? (Examples: Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Tyranids). What makes them look cool or scary? Think about their armor, their skin color, their size, the weapons they carry. Are they brave? Sneaky? Loud? Wise? We use special words called 'adjectives' to describe these things.

2. What are Adjectives? (10 mins)

Adjectives are describing words! They tell us *more* about nouns (people, places, things). Instead of just saying 'Space Marine', we could say a '*brave*, *blue-armored* Space Marine'. Instead of 'Ork', we could say a '*big*, *green*, *noisy* Ork'. Let's brainstorm some describing words for different Warhammer 40k groups:

  • Space Marines: brave, strong, shiny, colorful (blue, red, green, black), loyal, loud (Bolters!), heavy
  • Orks: green, big, tough, loud, mean, ramshackle, rusty, krumpin'
  • Eldar: graceful, ancient, mysterious, colorful, swift, psychic, pointy-eared
  • Tyranids: scary, alien, chitinous (like a bug's shell), sharp-clawed, hungry, purple, bony

Good job! Using strong adjectives makes our writing much more exciting and helps the reader picture exactly what we're talking about.

3. Create Your Character! (15-20 mins)

Now it's your turn to create a character from the 41st Millennium! It can be someone totally new you invent, or you can describe one of your favorite existing miniatures or characters. Use the describing words we talked about (or think of new ones!). Think about:

  1. Name: What is your character called?
  2. Group: Are they a Space Marine? An Ork? Something else?
  3. Appearance: What do they look like? (Color, size, armor, clothes, interesting features?) Use lots of adjectives!
  4. Personality: What are they like? (Brave, sneaky, grumpy, wise, funny?)
  5. Gear: Do they carry a special weapon or item? (e.g., a humming power sword, a rusty choppa, a shimmering staff)

Write down some notes or ideas about your character.

4. Write Your Description (15 mins)

Using your notes, write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) describing your character. Try to use at least 3-4 strong adjectives from our list or your own ideas. Make the reader feel like they can see your character!

Example Starter: My character is [Name], a [adjective] [type of unit]. He/She looks [describe appearance using adjectives]. They are known for being [describe personality using adjectives] and carry a [describe gear using adjectives].

5. Share and Draw (Optional Extension) (10 mins)

Read your character description aloud! Let's listen for those great describing words. Did they help us picture the character?

Optional: Use the plain paper and colored pencils/crayons to draw a picture of your character based on your written description.

6. Wrap-up

Great work today, recruit! You used fantastic describing words (adjectives) to bring characters from the 41st Millennium to life. Remember, using strong adjectives makes your writing much more interesting for your readers!
