- Assorted sand samples
- Assorted rock samples
- Magnifying glass (optional)
- Small containers or trays
No additional preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction: Begin by discussing with the toddler what dirt, sand, and rocks are. Show them some samples of each and ask if they can identify them.
- Sorting Activity: Provide the toddler with small containers or trays and ask them to sort the dirt, sand, and rocks into separate groups.
- Observation: Encourage the toddler to use a magnifying glass to examine the dirt, sand, and rocks more closely. Ask them to describe what they see and feel.
- Naming Activity: Show the toddler each sample again and ask them to name the different types of dirt, sand, and rocks.
- Discussion: Talk about the importance of dirt, sand, and rocks in our environment. Explain how they help plants grow, create habitats for animals, and form the Earth's surface.
Toddler Grade Talking Points
- "Dirt is the stuff we find on the ground. It can be different colors like brown, black, or even red!"
- "Sand is tiny little pieces that are like really tiny rocks. It feels soft and smooth."
- "Rocks are hard and can be different shapes and sizes. Some rocks are big like a mountain, and some are small like little pebbles."
- "Let's sort the dirt, sand, and rocks into different groups. Can you help me put them in the right places?"
- "Look through the magnifying glass and tell me what you see. Is it rough or smooth? Can you see any tiny things inside?"
- "Can you tell me the names of the different types of dirt, sand, and rocks? Great job!"
- "Dirt, sand, and rocks are important because they help plants grow and give animals a place to live. They also make up the ground we walk on and the mountains we see."
