Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts related to vehicles.

Materials and Prep

  • Toy vehicles (cars, trucks, etc.)
  • Counting cards (numbers 1-10)
  • Whiteboard or paper
  • Markers or pencils

Activities

  1. Counting Vehicles

Place a set of toy vehicles in front of you. Count each vehicle out loud and write the corresponding number on the whiteboard or paper.

  2. Addition Road Trip

Select two vehicles and place them side by side. Ask yourself how many vehicles you have in total. Write down the addition equation (e.g., 2 + 3 = 5) on the whiteboard or paper and solve it together.

  3. Subtraction Race

Select two vehicles and line them up. Ask yourself how many vehicles you have in total and then subtract the number of vehicles you remove. Write down the subtraction equation (e.g., 5 - 2 = 3) on the whiteboard or paper and solve it together.

Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn about arithmetic using vehicles."
  • "We will start by counting the vehicles. Can you help me count how many vehicles we have? Let's write down the numbers as we count."
  • "Now, let's do some addition. We will choose two vehicles and put them together. How many vehicles do we have in total? Let's write down the equation and solve it."
  • "Next, we will do some subtraction. We will choose two vehicles and take some away. How many vehicles are left? Let's write down the equation and solve it."
  • "Great job! Today, we learned how to count vehicles, add them together, and subtract them. Math can be fun, especially when we use vehicles to help us learn!"
