Objective

Materials and Prep

  • Pokemon cards or pictures
  • Paper and pencils
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard with markers or chalk
  • Pokemon-themed stickers or rewards (optional)

Prior knowledge of Pokemon characters and their names is helpful but not required.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Nouns
  2. Show the student a Pokemon card or picture and ask them to identify the noun in the sentence "I caught a _______." Discuss how a noun is a person, place, thing, or animal. Have the student write down three Pokemon nouns of their choice.

  3. Verbs in Action
  4. Choose a Pokemon card or picture and ask the student to come up with a verb that describes what the Pokemon is doing. For example, if the Pokemon is flying, the verb could be "flying." Have the student write down three Pokemon verbs of their choice.

  5. Adjective Descriptions
  6. Show the student a Pokemon card or picture and ask them to describe the Pokemon using adjectives. For example, if the Pokemon is big and strong, the adjectives could be "big" and "strong." Have the student write down three Pokemon adjectives of their choice.

  7. Building Sentences
  8. Using the nouns, verbs, and adjectives they have written down, ask the student to create sentences about Pokemon. Encourage them to be creative and use as many words as possible. For example, "I caught a big and strong Pikachu while it was flying."

  9. Grammar Hunt
  10. Give the student a Pokemon card or picture and ask them to identify the noun, verb, and adjective in a sentence about that Pokemon. For example, if the sentence is "Charizard is breathing fire," the noun is "Charizard," the verb is "breathing," and the adjective is "fire."

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Adjectives are words that describe or give more information about nouns. How would you describe your favorite Pokemon using adjectives?"
  • "Now that we know about nouns, verbs, and adjectives, let's use them to create sentences about Pokemon. Can you make a sentence using a noun, a verb, and an adjective?"
  • "Let's play a grammar hunt game with Pokemon! I will give you a sentence about a Pokemon, and you have to tell me the noun, verb, and adjective in that sentence. Are you ready?"
