Let's Find Action Verbs with Bluey and Bingo!

G'day! You know how Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli are always doing fun things? They run, jump, play games like 'Keepy Uppy', laugh, and hug!

The words that tell us *what* they are doing are called Action Verbs. Action verbs are words that show action! They tell us what the subject of the sentence is doing. Think about things *you* can do: read, write, draw, sing, eat, sleep. Those are all action verbs!

Example Time!

Let's look at some sentences about the Heeler family. The action verb is in bold:

  • Bluey chases her dad around the garden. (What does Bluey do? Chases!)
  • Bingo draws a picture for Chilli. (What does Bingo do? Draws!)
  • Bandit grills sausages for dinner. (What does Bandit do? Grills!)
  • Chilli reads a story to the girls. (What does Chilli do? Reads!)

Activity 1: Action Verb Hunt!

Read these sentences about Bluey and her friends. Can you find and circle (or write down) the action verb in each sentence?

  1. Lucky's dad pats Bandit on the back.
  2. Bluey and Bingo build a fort in the living room.
  3. Coco shares her toys with Indy.
  4. The Heelers drive to the beach.
  5. Snickers wags his tail.

Activity 2: Write Your Own Bluey Sentences!

Now it's your turn! Write three sentences about Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, Chilli, or any of their friends. Use an action verb in each sentence. Try using some of these action verbs or think of your own: plays, hides, digs, helps, dances, pretends, fetches, giggles.

  2. ________________________________________________________
  3. ________________________________________________________

Hooray! You Did It!

Great job! Today you learned that action verbs show what someone or something does. Keep an eye out for action verbs when you read or watch Bluey!
