Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe key elements of a story while using Minecraft as a fun and engaging context.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft game
- Computer or tablet with Minecraft installed
- Pen and paper
No prior knowledge of Minecraft is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction to Story Elements in Minecraft
- Create a Minecraft Story Map
- Write a Minecraft Adventure
- Share and Discuss
Start by discussing the basic elements of a story: characters, setting, and plot. Explain to the student that just like in a story, Minecraft also has these elements. Show them how to navigate through the Minecraft world and point out different characters, settings, and possible plotlines.
Have the student create a story map using pen and paper, where they can draw and label the characters, settings, and plot points of their own Minecraft adventure. Encourage them to be creative and think about the different elements they want to include.
Using their story map as a guide, have the student write a short adventure story based on their Minecraft world. Remind them to include the characters, settings, and plot points they have identified. Encourage them to use descriptive language and engage their imagination.
Have the student share their Minecraft adventure story with you or a family member. Discuss the story elements and ask them questions about their choices. Encourage them to reflect on the importance of each element and how it contributes to a well-rounded story.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "In a story, there are different parts that make it interesting. These parts are called characters, settings, and plot."
- "In Minecraft, we can also find characters, settings, and plotlines. Let's explore the Minecraft world together and see what we can find."
- "Now, let's create our own story map. This will help us plan out the important parts of our Minecraft adventure."
- "Using our story map, we will write a short adventure story. We can make it as exciting as we want, using our imagination and the elements we have identified."
- "Finally, we will share our Minecraft adventure story with someone else. We can talk about the characters, settings, and plot points we included and how they make the story interesting."
