Welcome to Hawkins Reading Adventures!

Today, we're diving into the world of reading using something super exciting – Stranger Things! Just like Mike, Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, and Will navigate the mysteries of Hawkins and the Upside Down, we'll explore the elements of a good story.

Materials Needed First!

  • A short reading passage related to Stranger Things (This could be a summary of an episode you choose, a character description, or a short, age-appropriate fan-written scene. You can find summaries online or write a simple one together.)
  • Notebook or paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Optional: Dictionary (online or physical)

Activity 1: Setting the Scene

Think about Hawkins, Indiana, and the Upside Down. How are they different? How does the setting make you feel? Read your chosen passage. Find 3-5 words that describe the setting. How does the place where the story happens affect what the characters do and feel? Discuss or write down your thoughts.

Activity 2: Character Deep Dive

Choose one character from your reading passage (or your favorite Stranger Things character). What makes them brave? What makes them scared? What motivates them (what do they want)? Find clues in the text (or think about the show) that support your ideas. For example, why is Eleven often quiet? What does Dustin's curiosity lead to? Write down 3 traits for your chosen character and explain why you chose them.

Activity 3: Uncovering Themes

Stranger Things isn't just about monsters! It's about big ideas. Some major themes are friendship, bravery, dealing with things you don't understand, and family (even found family!). Read your passage again. Can you find an example of one of these themes? How do the characters show friendship or courage? Discuss or write about the main message you found in the text.

Activity 4: Word Watch & Prediction

Were there any tricky words in your reading? Look them up! Write them down and try to use them in a sentence about Stranger Things. Now, based on what you read (or know about the show), what do you predict might happen next in the story or to the characters? Why do you think that?

Wrap-up: Create Your Own Scene!

Imagine you could add a short scene to Stranger Things. Write a few sentences describing what happens next, using one of the themes or focusing on the setting. Great job exploring the world of reading today!
