Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to count and perform simple addition and subtraction using car-themed objects.

Materials and Prep

  • Toy cars
  • Counting cards or flashcards
  • Small containers or bowls
  • Pen and paper

Activities

  1. Counting Cars:

Place a set of toy cars in front of your child. Ask them to count the number of cars and write down the number on a piece of paper. Repeat this activity a few times with different numbers of cars.

  2. Car Addition:

Take two small containers or bowls and label them as "Garage 1" and "Garage 2". Place a certain number of cars in each garage. Ask your child to count the total number of cars in both garages and write down the sum on a piece of paper.

  3. Car Subtraction:

Similar to the previous activity, label two containers as "Garage 1" and "Garage 2" and place a certain number of cars in each. This time, ask your child to subtract the number of cars in Garage 2 from the number of cars in Garage 1 and write down the difference on a piece of paper.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "Let's count the cars together. Can you say the numbers out loud?"
  • "Look at the two garages. How many cars are there in total? Can you count them for me?"
  • "Now, let's try some subtraction. How many cars are in Garage 1? And how many in Garage 2? What is the difference between the two?"
