Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore the connection between language arts and art, and create your own artwork inspired by a story.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank paper
  • Pencils or crayons
  • An age-appropriate storybook with colorful illustrations

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have read the storybook and familiarized yourself with the illustrations.

Activities

  1. Read the storybook together, paying close attention to the illustrations. Discuss how the illustrations help tell the story and bring it to life.

  2. Choose a favorite scene or character from the story and ask your child to draw it on a blank piece of paper. Encourage them to use their imagination and add details to their artwork.

  3. After they have finished their drawing, have them write a short description or a sentence about their artwork. This can be a description of the scene or character they drew, or an imaginative story related to the artwork.

  4. Display their artwork and description in a designated area, such as a bulletin board or their bedroom wall. Encourage them to share their artwork and story with family members or friends.
