Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore the connection between language arts and art, and create your own artwork inspired by a story.
Materials and Prep
- Blank paper
- Pencils or crayons
- An age-appropriate storybook with colorful illustrations
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have read the storybook and familiarized yourself with the illustrations.
Activities
-
Read the storybook together, paying close attention to the illustrations. Discuss how the illustrations help tell the story and bring it to life.
-
Choose a favorite scene or character from the story and ask your child to draw it on a blank piece of paper. Encourage them to use their imagination and add details to their artwork.
-
After they have finished their drawing, have them write a short description or a sentence about their artwork. This can be a description of the scene or character they drew, or an imaginative story related to the artwork.
-
Display their artwork and description in a designated area, such as a bulletin board or their bedroom wall. Encourage them to share their artwork and story with family members or friends.
