Vroom Vroom Counting Fun!

Lesson Start (Engagement - 5 mins):

  • Gather your toy cars. Spread them out and show excitement! "Wow, look at all these amazing cars! Let's play! Vroom Vroom!"
  • Let the child pick up and explore the cars freely for a minute or two to spark interest. Ask simple questions like "What color is this car?" or "Does this car go fast?"

Activity 1: Counting Cars Parade (10 mins):

  • Line up 3 cars in a row like a parade.
  • Say, "Let's count our parade cars!"
  • Point clearly to the first car: "One!" Encourage your child to say "One!" and point too.
  • Point to the second car: "Two!" Encourage repetition.
  • Point to the third car: "Three!" Encourage repetition.
  • Cheer! "Hooray! We counted THREE cars! 1, 2, 3!"
  • Repeat this process a few times, maybe varying the number (just one car, then two cars, then three). If the child masters 3 easily, try adding a fourth and fifth car, always focusing on touching each car as you count it.

Activity 2: Color Parking Lot (5-10 mins):

  • "Oh look! We have cars of different colors! Let's sort them."
  • If you have distinct colors (e.g., red and blue), say, "Let's put all the red cars together over here, and all the blue cars together over there."
  • Help the child group the cars by color.
  • Once sorted, you can count the cars in one group: "How many red cars do we have? Let's count! One, two!"

Optional Extension: Numbered Parking Spaces:

  • On a piece of paper, draw 3 simple squares side-by-side. Write '1' in the first, '2' in the second, '3' in the third.
  • "This is our special car parking lot! Can you park one car in space number one?"
  • Guide them to place one car. "Now let's park two cars in space number two." Help them count out two cars and place them. Repeat for three. This visually connects the number symbol to the quantity.

Lesson Conclusion (2-3 mins):

  • Gather the cars together.
  • Review briefly: "We had so much fun counting cars today! We counted one, two, three cars! You did a great job!"
  • Count the cars one last time as you put them away together.
