Objective
By the end of this lesson, the first-grade student will be able to practice handwriting through copywork activities.
Materials and Prep
- Blank paper or lined paper
- Pencil or pen
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Choose a short sentence or phrase that the student would like to practice writing. It could be a favorite quote, a line from a book, or a simple sentence.
Example: "The sun is shining."
-
Write the chosen sentence or phrase neatly on the top of a blank or lined paper. Make sure to use clear and legible handwriting.
Example: Write "The sun is shining." at the top of the paper.
-
Ask the student to carefully copy the sentence or phrase below the original writing. Encourage them to pay attention to the shape and size of each letter, as well as the spacing between words.
Example: The student should write "The sun is shining." below the original sentence.
-
Repeat the copywork activity with different sentences or phrases, allowing the student to choose or suggest their own each time.

- "We will start by writing the chosen sentence or phrase at the top of our paper. We want to make sure it looks neat and clear."
- "Then, we will carefully copy the sentence or phrase below the original writing. We need to pay attention to the shape and size of each letter, and the spaces between words."
- "We can do this activity multiple times, using different sentences or phrases each time. It's a great way to improve our handwriting!"
