Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills in a fun and creative way through crocheting.

Materials and Prep

  • Crochet hooks (appropriate size for the yarn)
  • Yarn in various colors
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Pen and paper
  • No prior knowledge of crochet is required

Activities

  1. Introduction to Crochet

Begin by introducing the student to crochet. Show them different crochet hooks and explain their sizes. Demonstrate how to hold the hook and yarn, and how to make a basic chain stitch. Allow the student to practice making chains for a few minutes.

  2. Counting Stitches

Explain to the student that each stitch in crochet represents a number. Show them how to count the stitches in a row or round. Ask the student to count the stitches in a small crochet swatch you have made beforehand. Write down the number of stitches on a piece of paper.

  3. Addition and Subtraction

Show the student how to increase or decrease the number of stitches in a row or round. Explain that adding stitches is like addition, while removing stitches is like subtraction. Give the student a simple addition or subtraction problem and ask them to demonstrate it by adding or removing stitches in their crochet work.

  4. Measurement and Multiplication

Introduce the concept of measurement using a tape measure or ruler. Show the student how to measure the length or width of their crochet work. Explain that multiplication can be used to calculate the total number of stitches in a longer piece. Ask the student to measure their crochet work and calculate the total number of stitches using multiplication.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Crochet is a fun way to create things using yarn and a special hook."
  • "You can count the stitches in crochet to keep track of how many you have."
  • "Adding stitches is like adding numbers, and removing stitches is like subtracting numbers."
  • "We can measure our crochet work to see how long or wide it is."
  • "Multiplication can help us calculate the total number of stitches in a longer piece."
