Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts, such as addition and subtraction, to solve simple math problems.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Blank paper
  • Counting objects (e.g., buttons, coins, or small toys)

Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of numbers and counting.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Addition with Counting Objects

    Take a handful of counting objects (e.g., buttons) and place them on the table. Count how many objects there are together. Then, add a few more objects to the pile. Count the new total. Ask the student to figure out how many objects were added.

  2. Activity 2: Subtraction with Counting Objects

    Start with a pile of counting objects. Count how many objects there are. Remove a few objects from the pile. Count the new total. Ask the student to figure out how many objects were taken away.

  3. Activity 3: Number Line Game

    Draw a number line on a piece of paper, starting from 1 and going up to 10. Ask the student to roll a dice or pick a number card. The student should then move that many spaces forward on the number line. Encourage them to count aloud and identify the new number they land on.
