Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to give and understand directions in Spanish.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- Printed map of a fictional city
- Spanish-English dictionary (optional)
No prior knowledge of Spanish is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Start by introducing basic vocabulary related to directions in Spanish. Teach words such as:
- left - izquierda
- right - derecha
- straight - derecho
- turn - girar
- intersection - intersección
- traffic light - semáforo
-
Provide the student with a printed map of a fictional city. Ask them to study the map and identify various locations (e.g., park, school, library, etc.)
-
Next, have the student practice giving and following directions using the map. They can write down step-by-step instructions in Spanish, using the vocabulary they learned earlier. For example:
- From the school, go straight for two blocks.
- At the intersection, turn right.
- Continue until you see the park on your left.
-
Once the student has written their directions, have them exchange maps with a partner. Each student should try to follow the directions provided by their partner and navigate the fictional city.
