Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore the connection between language arts and art, and create your own artwork inspired by a story.

Materials and Prep

  • Art supplies (such as paper, pencils, markers, crayons, or paints)
  • A storybook or a printed short story
  • Access to a computer or tablet with internet

Activities

  1. Read a story together or independently. Pay attention to the descriptions of the characters, settings, and actions in the story.

  2. Discuss the story and its elements. Ask questions like:

    • What did you like about the story?
    • What were the important parts of the story?
    • How did the author describe the characters and settings?
    • How did the story make you feel?
  3. Choose a favorite scene or character from the story. Use your art supplies to create a drawing or painting that represents that scene or character. Pay attention to the details and try to capture the mood of the story.

  4. Share your artwork with others. Explain why you chose that scene or character and how it relates to the story.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Language arts is not just about reading and writing. It can also be connected to other forms of art, like drawing and painting."
  • "When we read a story, we can imagine the characters, settings, and actions in our minds. Artists can use their imagination to create visual representations of those elements."
  • "Descriptive words in a story can help us visualize the details, colors, and emotions in a scene. Artists can use their skills to bring those descriptions to life in their artwork."
  • "Sharing our artwork with others allows us to express our thoughts and feelings about a story in a different way. It can also inspire others to explore the story through their own art."
