Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a descriptive paragraph about a piece of artwork.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • An artwork of your choice (can be a printout or a picture from a book)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a clear understanding of what descriptive writing is.

Activities

  1. Choose an artwork that you find interesting. It can be a painting, a sculpture, or any other form of art.
  2. Take a few minutes to observe the artwork closely. Look at the colors, shapes, and details.
  3. Using your pencil and paper, write a descriptive paragraph about the artwork. Describe what you see and how it makes you feel. Use adjectives to make your writing more interesting.
  4. Read your paragraph aloud and share it with someone in your family. Ask for their feedback and see if they can visualize the artwork based on your description.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "What is descriptive writing? Descriptive writing is when we use words to create a picture in the reader's mind. It helps us to describe something in detail."
  • "Why is it important to observe the artwork before writing about it? By observing the artwork closely, we can notice all the details and colors, which will help us write a more accurate and vivid description."
  • "What kind of words can we use to make our writing more interesting? We can use adjectives, which are words that describe nouns. For example, instead of saying 'the artwork is colorful,' we can say 'the artwork is vibrant and full of different colors.'
  • "Why is it helpful to read our writing aloud and share it with someone? Reading aloud helps us hear how our writing sounds and if it makes sense. Sharing it with someone allows us to get feedback and see if our description is clear enough for others to understand."
