Objective
By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts related to water.
Materials and Prep
- A container of water
- A small cup
- A toy boat
- A toy fish
- A towel or mat for the activity area
Before starting the lesson, make sure the toddler is familiar with counting numbers from 1 to 10.
Activities
- Counting Drops: Fill the small cup with water and ask the toddler to count the number of drops they can pour into the container of water. Repeat this activity a few times, encouraging the toddler to count each drop.
- Sinking and Floating: Place the toy boat and toy fish in the container of water. Ask the toddler to predict whether each item will sink or float. Let them place the items in the water and observe what happens. Discuss the results and reinforce the concepts of sinking and floating.
- Water Addition: Pour a small amount of water into the container and ask the toddler to add more water using the small cup. Encourage them to count how many cups of water they add. Help them understand the concept of addition by combining quantities.
- Water Subtraction: Start with a container filled with water. Ask the toddler to pour out a certain amount of water using the small cup. Help them count how much water is left in the container after each pour. Introduce the concept of subtraction by taking away quantities.
Toddler Grade Talking Points
- "Water is important for many things, like drinking and playing."
- "When we pour water, we can count how many drops we have."
- "Some things sink in water, and some things float on top."
- "When we add water together, we get more."
- "When we take away water, we have less."
