Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Legos.

Materials and Prep

  • Legos (various colors and sizes)
  • Counting cards or number flashcards (0-10)
  • Writing materials (paper and crayons/markers)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Counting with Legos:

Start by counting the number of Legos you have. Use the counting cards or number flashcards to practice counting from 0 to 10. For each number, build a tower using that number of Legos. Say the number aloud as you add each Lego to the tower.

  2. Adding and Subtracting with Legos:

Choose two different colored Legos and assign them as "addition" and "subtraction" bricks. Create simple addition and subtraction problems using these Legos. For example, if you have 3 addition bricks and remove 1 subtraction brick, how many Legos are left? Use the Legos to physically represent the problems and count the remaining Legos to find the answer.

  3. Building Shapes:

Use different colored Legos to build various shapes such as squares, rectangles, and triangles. Count the number of Legos used for each shape. Discuss how different shapes have different numbers of sides and corners.

Preschool Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to have fun with Legos and learn about counting and math!"
  • "Let's start by counting all the Legos we have. Can you say the numbers as we count together?"
  • "Now, let's build towers using our Legos. We will add one Lego at a time and say the number out loud."
  • "Next, we will use different colored Legos to practice addition and subtraction. We will create problems and use the Legos to help us find the answers."
  • "Finally, we will use Legos to build different shapes. We will count the number of Legos used for each shape and learn about sides and corners."
