Objective

By the end of this lesson, the preschool student will be able to create a pumpkin-themed artwork and develop an appreciation for pumpkins as a subject in art.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper or canvas
  • Paints (orange, green, brown, and any other desired colors)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or crayons
  • Reference images of pumpkins (optional)

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of pumpkins as a subject in art. Show the student different examples of pumpkin artworks, either through reference images or by using real pumpkins.

  2. Guide the student to draw a pumpkin shape on the paper or canvas using a pencil. Encourage them to be creative and add details like a stem and ridges.

  3. Let the student choose their desired colors and help them paint their pumpkin. Remind them to have fun and experiment with different brush strokes.

  4. While the paint is drying, assist the student in cutting out leaf shapes from green paper or any other desired materials. They can also draw and color the leaves if preferred.

  5. Once the pumpkin is dry, help the student glue the leaves onto the top of the pumpkin to create a stem. They can also add other decorations like glitter or stickers if desired.

  6. Finally, encourage the student to use markers or crayons to add any additional details or designs to their artwork. This is an opportunity for them to personalize their pumpkin creation.
