Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe different aspects of pumpkins, such as their appearance, parts, and uses.
Materials and Prep
- A pumpkin (real or picture)
- Paper and crayons
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pumpkin-related storybook (optional)
Activities
- Introduction (5 minutes): Show the student the pumpkin and ask them to describe its appearance. Discuss the color, shape, and size of the pumpkin.
- Pumpkin Parts (10 minutes): Explain that pumpkins have different parts. Cut out shapes of pumpkin parts from paper (stem, leaves, and vines) and have the student glue them onto a separate piece of paper to create their own pumpkin.
- Pumpkin Uses (10 minutes): Discuss the different uses of pumpkins, such as carving for Halloween, making pumpkin pie, or using the seeds for planting. Encourage the student to share any other uses they may know.
- Storytime (optional, 10 minutes): Read a pumpkin-related storybook to the student, such as "Pumpkin Jack" by Will Hubbell or "The Runaway Pumpkin" by Kevin Lewis.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Pumpkins are big, round fruits that come in different colors like orange, yellow, and sometimes even white."
- "They have a hard outer skin and a soft inside with lots of seeds."
- "Pumpkins have a stem on top, like the one you see on apples, and they also have leaves and vines that grow from the stem."
- "We can use pumpkins for many things, like carving funny faces for Halloween, making yummy pumpkin pie, or even planting the seeds to grow more pumpkins."
