Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using pumpkins.

Materials and Prep

  • Pumpkin (real or fake)
  • Pen or marker
  • Counting objects (e.g. buttons, beans, or small toys)
  • Whiteboard or large piece of paper

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Counting Seeds: Cut open the pumpkin and have your child count the seeds. Write down the number of seeds on the whiteboard or paper.
  2. Addition Fun: Using the counting objects, ask your child to place a certain number of objects on one side and another certain number on the other side. Then, ask them to count how many objects there are in total.
  3. Subtraction Challenge: Take away some objects from the total and ask your child to figure out how many are left. Encourage them to use the concept of subtraction to solve the problem.
  4. Pumpkin Patterns: Create a pattern with the counting objects using different colors or shapes. Ask your child to continue the pattern by adding the next object in the sequence.

  • "We can count the seeds inside the pumpkin to practice our counting skills."
  • "Let's add some objects together to see how many we have in total. This is called addition."
  • "Now, let's take away some objects and see how many are left. This is called subtraction."
  • "We can also make patterns with our counting objects. Can you continue the pattern?"
