Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the changes that occur in the environment during the fall season.
Materials and Prep
- Colorful construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers or crayons
- Leaves (real or artificial)
- Optional: Fall-themed books or pictures
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
1. Leaf Collage: Collect a variety of leaves or use artificial leaves. Help your child cut out tree trunk shapes from the construction paper. Then, have them glue the leaves onto the tree trunks to create a fall-themed collage.
2. Leaf Rubbings: Place a leaf under a piece of paper and help your child gently rub a crayon or marker over the paper to reveal the leaf's texture and shape.
3. Nature Walk: Take a walk outside and observe the changes in nature during the fall season. Encourage your child to notice the different colors of leaves, the sound of crunching leaves under their feet, and any other signs of fall they may come across.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "During the fall season, the weather starts to get cooler and the leaves on trees change colors."
- "Leaves change colors because they stop making food for the tree and the green chlorophyll breaks down."
- "When the chlorophyll breaks down, other pigments in the leaves, like orange and red, become visible."
- "The leaves eventually fall off the trees and cover the ground."
- "Animals start preparing for winter by gathering food and finding warm places to stay."
- "Fall is a time when we can see and feel the changes happening in nature."
