Materials and Prep

  • Whale books or online resources
  • Whiteboard or large paper with markers
  • Printed pictures of different whale species
  • Optional: Whale toys or figurines

Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with basic whale facts and prepare the materials for the activities.

Activities

  1. Introduce Whales: Show pictures of different whale species and discuss their size, appearance, and habitats. Ask the student what they already know about whales and encourage them to ask questions.
  2. Whale Facts Game: Write down interesting facts about whales on the whiteboard or large paper. Cut out the corresponding facts and mix them up. Have the student match the facts to the correct whale picture.
  3. Whale Sounds: Play recordings of whale sounds and discuss how whales use sound to communicate. Encourage the student to imitate the sounds and talk about the different types of whale vocalizations.
  4. Whale Movement: Use the whale toys or figurines (if available) to demonstrate different types of whale movements, such as breaching, diving, or tail slapping. Discuss why whales exhibit these behaviors.
  5. Whale Conservation: Talk about the importance of protecting whales and their habitats. Discuss the impact of human activities on whale populations and brainstorm ways to help conserve these magnificent creatures.

  • "Whales make sounds to talk to each other, just like we talk to our friends."
  • "Some whales can jump out of the water, while others dive deep down."
  • "We need to take care of whales and their homes in the ocean. People sometimes do things that can hurt them."
