Materials

  • Board books about trucks (e.g., 'Little Blue Truck', 'Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site', 'My Big Truck Book')
  • Various toy trucks (dump truck, fire truck, cement mixer, etc.)
  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Crayons or washable markers
  • Optional: Simple truck puzzle or matching cards

Truck Time Reading Fun!

1. Truck Roundup (Introduction - 5 mins)

Gather your toy trucks in a pile. Sit down with your toddler and pick up different trucks. Say the name of the truck clearly: "Look, a DUMP TRUCK!" Encourage your toddler to repeat. Talk about the colors: "This fire truck is RED." Ask simple questions: "Can you find the BIG truck?" or "Where are the wheels?"

2. Story Time: Vroom Vroom! (Reading - 10 mins)

Choose one of the truck-themed board books. Sit comfortably together. Read the story with enthusiasm! Point to the pictures as you read. Make truck sounds ('Vroom!', 'Beep beep!', 'Rumble rumble!'). Ask interactive questions like, "What color is this truck?" or "Can you point to the little truck?" Let your toddler turn the sturdy board pages if they want.

3. Truck Sounds Symphony (Activity - 5 mins)

Let's make some noise! Using the toy trucks or just your voices, make different truck sounds together. Drive the trucks around making their sounds. "The dump truck goes RUMBLE RUMBLE!" "The fire truck goes WOO-OO WOO-OO!" Be silly and have fun!

4. Color Match Movers (Optional Activity - 5 mins)

Place a few pieces of colored construction paper on the floor (e.g., red, yellow, blue). Ask your toddler to drive the toy truck of the matching color onto the paper. "Can you drive the RED fire truck to the red paper?" You can also use truck matching cards or a simple puzzle if you have one.

5. Truck Art (Creative Activity - 10 mins)

Give your toddler some paper and crayons. Encourage them to draw trucks or just scribble and make marks representing trucks. Talk about the colors they are using. You could draw a simple truck outline for them to color in. Say things like, "You're making big black wheels!"

6. Wrap-up & Review (2 mins)

Gather the trucks again briefly. Ask, "Which truck was your favorite today?" Sing a simple made-up song about trucks or reread a favorite page from the book. Give lots of praise for participating!
