Objective

By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to identify different animals and their characteristics through play and exploration with Fischer Price Little People.

Materials and Prep

  • Fischer Price Little People animal figures (such as farm animals, zoo animals, etc.)
  • A designated play area or table
  • A small container with water (optional)
  • A towel or mat to keep the play area clean

Activities

  1. Introduce the animal figures to the toddler, one by one. Encourage the toddler to hold and explore each figure.
  2. Ask the toddler questions about each animal, such as "What sound does this animal make?" or "Where do you think this animal lives?"
  3. Encourage the toddler to group the animals based on their characteristics. For example, they can group the farm animals together and the zoo animals together.
  4. If you have the water container, demonstrate how some animals live in water by placing the appropriate figures in the container. Allow the toddler to observe and imitate the animals' movements.
  5. Engage in pretend play with the animal figures. Encourage the toddler to create stories and scenarios involving the different animals.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "Look at this animal! Can you make the sound it makes? What other animals make similar sounds?"
  • "Where do you think this animal lives? On a farm or in a zoo?"
  • "Let's group the animals together. Can you find all the farm animals? How about the zoo animals?"
  • "Some animals live in water. Can you show me how a fish moves in the water?"
  • "Let's pretend that the lion is the king of the jungle. What other animals can be his friends?"
