Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Calculator (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Measurements and Conversions:

    • Measure your height in inches and convert it to feet.
    • Measure your weight in pounds and convert it to kilograms.
    • Measure the circumference of your head in inches and convert it to centimeters.
  2. Body Temperature:

    • Measure your body temperature using a thermometer in degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Convert the temperature to degrees Celsius using the formula: Celsius = (Fahrenheit - 32) * 5/9.
  3. Heartbeats per Minute:

    • Measure your heartbeats per minute by counting for one minute.
    • Calculate the number of heartbeats in an hour.
    • Calculate the number of heartbeats in a day.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Did you know that we can use math to learn more about our bodies? Let's explore some fun activities that involve arithmetic and the human body!"
  • "In our first activity, we will measure our height in inches and convert it to feet. Can you think of any advantages of using feet as a unit of measurement for height?"
  • "Next, we will measure our weight in pounds and convert it to kilograms. Why do you think some countries use kilograms instead of pounds to measure weight?"
  • "For our third activity, we will measure the circumference of our head in inches and convert it to centimeters. Can you think of any other everyday objects that we measure using inches and centimeters?"
  • "Now, let's measure our body temperature using a thermometer. We will learn how to convert the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius. Why do you think different countries use different temperature scales?"
  • "In our last activity, we will measure our heartbeats per minute and calculate the number of heartbeats in an hour and a day. Can you think of any factors that can affect our heart rate?"
