Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply geometric concepts using Legos, including identifying and classifying different shapes, understanding symmetry, and exploring spatial relationships.

Materials and Prep

  • Legos (various shapes and sizes)
  • Paper and pencil
  • Ruler
  • Optional: Geometric shape templates (can be handmade)

Activities

  1. Building with Legos:

Use your Legos to create different geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles. Take a picture or draw each shape you build and label them with their corresponding names.

  2. Exploring symmetry:

Build a symmetrical design using Legos. Start with a base and create a design that is the same on both sides. Take a picture or draw your symmetrical design.

  3. Measuring with Legos:

Use your Legos as a measuring tool. Measure the length and width of different objects in your home using Legos. Record your measurements in inches or centimeters.

  4. Creating a Lego city:

Design and build a Lego city using various geometric shapes. Label the different buildings and structures with their corresponding shapes.

Fourth Grade Talking Points

  • "Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, and properties of figures."
  • "Shapes can be classified into different categories based on their properties. For example, a square has four equal sides and four right angles."
  • "Symmetry means that something can be divided into two equal parts that mirror each other. It's like a reflection."
  • "Spatial relationships refer to how objects are positioned in relation to each other in space. We can use Legos to explore and understand spatial relationships."
  • "When measuring with Legos, we can compare the length and width of objects using the standardized size of Legos as a unit of measurement."
  • "By building with Legos, we can apply our knowledge of geometry to create different shapes and structures."
