Objective

By the end of this lesson, the first-grade homeschool student will be able to create a piece of artwork using different materials and techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank white paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Magazines or newspapers
  • Optional: Paint and paintbrushes

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Create a Collage

Using the magazines or newspapers, have the student cut out various pictures and shapes. Then, provide them with the glue stick and blank white paper. Encourage them to arrange and glue the cutouts onto the paper to create a collage. They can use their imagination and creativity to make a unique artwork.

  2. Draw and Color

Give the student the colored pencils or crayons and allow them to choose a subject they would like to draw. It can be anything they find interesting, such as animals, nature, or their favorite characters. Encourage them to use different colors and shading techniques to make their drawing come to life.

  3. Optional: Paint

If the student has access to paint and paintbrushes, they can explore painting as another art medium. Provide them with a blank sheet of paper and let them experiment with mixing colors and creating different textures using the paint.
