Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of hot air balloons and how they work.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Crayons or markers
  • Tape
  • String
  • A small plastic bag
  • A hairdryer

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the concept of hot air balloons and how they are able to fly.

Activities

  1. Draw and decorate a hot air balloon on a piece of construction paper.
  2. Cut out the hot air balloon shape.
  3. Tape a string to the top of the hot air balloon.
  4. Blow up the plastic bag with air and tie it off.
  5. Hold the hairdryer underneath the plastic bag and turn it on to create hot air.
  6. Observe what happens to the hot air balloon when the hairdryer blows hot air into it.
