Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the impact of Halloween on the environment and identify ways to celebrate Halloween in an eco-friendly manner.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Research: Spend some time researching the environmental impact of Halloween. Look for information on topics such as energy consumption, waste generation, and the use of natural resources during this holiday.

  2. Brainstorm: Make a list of traditional Halloween activities and decorations that may have negative effects on the environment. Then, think of alternative ideas that are more eco-friendly.

  3. Create: Choose one eco-friendly Halloween activity or decoration from your brainstormed list and create it using materials you have at home. For example, you could make a recycled paper jack-o'-lantern or a spooky craft using natural materials like leaves and twigs.

  4. Reflect: Write a short paragraph about what you have learned during this lesson. Include at least two ways you can celebrate Halloween while being mindful of the environment.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Halloween is a holiday that many people enjoy. It's a time for dressing up, going trick-or-treating, and having fun."
  • "Did you know that Halloween can also have an impact on the environment? This means it can affect the world around us."
  • "Some Halloween activities use a lot of energy, like leaving lights on all night. This can waste electricity."
  • "Other activities and decorations can create a lot of waste, like throwing away costumes or using disposable plates and cups. This can fill up landfills."
  • "But don't worry! We can still have a fun Halloween while being kind to the environment. We can make eco-friendly choices."
  • "For example, instead of using a lot of electricity for decorations, we can use natural materials like leaves and pumpkins. We can also choose to wear costumes made from recycled materials or reuse costumes from previous years."
  • "By making these choices, we can help protect our planet while still enjoying Halloween. It's important to take care of the environment for ourselves and future generations."
