Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic concepts of physics related to Halloween.
Materials and Prep
- Black construction paper
- White chalk or crayon
- Scissors
- String or thread
- A small toy or object
Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of colors and shapes.
Activities
-
Make a Halloween Ghost:
- Draw a ghost shape on the black construction paper using white chalk or crayon.
- Cut out the ghost shape carefully.
- Attach a string or thread to the top of the ghost.
- Hang the ghost from a doorway or ceiling and observe how it moves.
-
Explore Gravity:
- Hold a small toy or object in your hand.
- Ask yourself, "What will happen if I let go of the toy?"
- Release the toy and observe how it falls down due to gravity.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about physics, which is a branch of science that studies how things move and interact with each other."
- "Physics helps us understand why objects fall down instead of floating in the air."
- "Gravity is a force that pulls objects towards the Earth. It's what makes things fall down."
- "When we made the ghost, we observed how it moved when we hung it up. It swung back and forth because of gravity."
- "When we dropped the toy, we saw how it fell straight down because of gravity."
